French 15th C Choir Stall Museum Provenance
French 15th C Choir Stall Museum Provenance

A Rare Carved Oak French Church bench Misericords circa 1480. Monastic rules were that monks are supposed to stand during services which were conducted several times a day. This made it very tiresome for elderly monks. The seats were therefore made to hinge upwards and allow the monks to lean on to the upright seat or bench, thus allowing them to look as though they were seated. The undersides were carved in various styles, but in many cases they were carved with animals, fables, and bestiary images. Provenance: Arnold Seligman, Rey & Co. Inc. Invoice to City Art Museum, St. Louis, MO. dated May 8th 1934 for the amount of $5,450.00 which in today's money is $101,784.53 in 2018.
